Race Report: Ren Fest Crit

Team Dayton did a nice job putting together the Ren Fest crit this year. It was a decent turn out for a local race – 15 ladies I believe. It was the first time in a while that it didn’t rain during our race, but it was HOT. There was also an unfortunate crash in the race right before ours that sent two guys to the hospital with injuries (I think one collarbone and one serious but not threatening knock on the head). We ended up starting about a half hour late waiting for the ambulances. By the time we got started, I had lost my warm up looseness in the legs but was half over heated.

The race itself was decent. There were several ladies being aggressive and attacking. Amy was great chasing things down. In the end, nothing got away though. Unfortunately, it was so hot that my brain kind of shut off before we got to the finish. Normally in a sprint, I go into auto-drive for maybe the last 500m, but this time my brain shut off way too early with about two laps to go. I didn’t have the best wheel coming into the last turn and didn’t respond to the jump well at all even though I should have known it was coming. I ended up 3rd, which I find quite acceptable for how toasted I was with the heat. Congrats to Brooke on the win and Emily with her cookie-fueled second place.
